Handmade ceramic table lamp by Funi, Iceland, circa 1960s–1970s. The lamp features a tapered, bottle-shaped form with a glossy chestnut-brown glaze on the upper section. The lower portion is decorated with a dramatic volcanic-style textured glaze in deep black with fiery orange highlights, evoking Iceland’s volcanic landscape. The underside is clearly stamped “Handmade in Iceland” and bears the Funi workshop mark.  This lamp is a rare and striking example of Icelandic mid-century ceramic design, showcasing Funi’s signature volcanic glaze work inspired by the country’s natural landscape.

Funi was a ceramics workshop in Iceland, founded 1946, active especially in the mid-20th century.  They made both one-off pieces and mass produced objects. Their designs include pieces with “lava” textures or rough surfaces, and in the 1960s–70s they experimented with decorations, glazes, and textures.  There is documentation that Funi used Icelandic clay, and from about 1950–1970 their production used local materials and stylistic variations.

This example has new electrics, switching with a fabric cable and brass connector.
