An iconic Model CH 22 lounge armchair, designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1950 and produced by Carl Hansen & Søn, Denmark. One of Wegner’s earliest designs for the manufacturer, the CH 22 is regarded as a cornerstone of Danish modern furniture. The chair is crafted in solid oak, precisely constructed with Wegner’s hallmark exposed finger joints at the armrests and back. Its seat, hand-woven in paper cord, demonstrates the traditional Danish craft of durability and comfort. The gently rounded top rail with distinctive oval plywood inserts adds both structural integrity and playful detailing, while the low, wide stance and organic armrests emphasise Wegner’s talent for creating furniture that is at once sculptural, functional, and inviting.
The CH 22 was introduced in 1950 as part of Wegner’s very first collection for Carl Hansen & Søn, together with the CH 23, CH 24 (Wishbone Chair), and CH 25. This groundbreaking series established Wegner as the “Master of the Chair” and set new standards in modern seating design. Over his lifetime, Wegner designed more than 500 chairs, many of which—such as the Wishbone Chair, the Sawbuck Chair, and the Smiling Chair—have become enduring icons of mid-century design. The CH 22 remains a magnificent example of his approach: organic in form, innovative in construction, and timeless in appeal.
