The ‘Kandidaten’ sofa was introduced in the 1950s, during the height of the mid-century modern movement. It quickly gained acclaim for its striking appearance and comfortable seating. The sofa’s proportions are carefully balanced to provide ample seating space while maintaining a sleek and sophisticated look.
Ib Kofod-Larsen was a prominent Danish furniture designer known for his contributions to mid-century modern design. Born in 1921, Kofod-Larsen’s work reflected the principles of Scandinavian design, emphasising simplicity, functionality, and craftsmanship. His designs often featured clean lines, organic forms, and a focus on the natural beauty of materials. One of Kofod-Larsen’s iconic creations is the walnut ‘Kandidaten’ sofa, produced by the Danish manufacturer OPE (Ole Petersen Export). This sofa, known for its elegant silhouette and luxurious materials, exemplifies Kofod-Larsen’s design ethos.
With this piece, the upholstery has been recently updated in Camira Craggan Flax Esker – 85% Wool, 10% Flax, 5% Polyamide, both for comfort and durability. In addition, there is later rubber webbing and immaculate repairs to the timber.
