Model 133 Armchair “Spadestolen”

Finn Juhl
France & Daverkosen
Denmark, 1950s
Price: POA

A “Spadestolen” (Model 133) armchairs, designed by Finn Juhl in 1953 and manufactured by France & Daverkosen (later France & Søn), Denmark. These armchairs exemplify Juhl’s sculptural approach to furniture design, combining organic forms, architectural balance, and modern comfort. The model takes its nickname “Spadestolen” (“The Spade Chair”) from the distinctive shape of its armrests, which resemble the flat blade of a spade. The frame is solid teak, masterfully shaped with smooth curves and subtle tapers with wide, flat armrests, seamlessly integrated into the frame and splayed outward in Juhl’s characteristic sculptural style. This piece has been reupholstered inappropriately and would benefit from reupholstering in more in keeping fabric and trim.
