A rare “Tokyo” bench, designed by Swedish architect and furniture designer Yngvar Sandström in 1964 for Nordiska Kompaniet (NK). The bench exemplifies Sandström’s interest in combining Scandinavian craftsmanship with international modernism, here drawing inspiration from Japanese aesthetics. The piece features a slatted teak seat raised on a sculptural base of tapering legs, joined by subtle cross-stretchers that lend both structural stability and visual rhythm. The clean lines, warm materiality, and light, elevated form are characteristic of Sandström’s elegant, functional approach to design. The seat and frame are in oak.

The Tokyo bench was introduced during a period of strong Japanese influence on Scandinavian design, reflecting shared values of simplicity, proportion, and natural materials. Produced in limited numbers by NK, it remains one of Sandström’s most celebrated designs, notable for its refined architectural presence and timeless appeal.
