Anna-Johanna Ångström (1938-2021) was a prominent Swedish textile artist celebrated for her mastery of the rölakan (flat-weave or kelim) technique— handwoven wool on a linen warp. Many of her mid-20th-century rugs are signed with a distinctive “Å” in one corner, marking her authorship.

An Aniara Rölakan flat weave rug typically features:

  • Rölakan (a traditional Swedish flat weave technique), which creates a thin, durable, and reversible textile with a tight weave.
  • Known for blending traditional Scandinavian motifs with modern geometric abstraction, often drawing inspiration from 18th– 19th-century floral themes. Geometric or floral motif (like the Aniara or Lovö motifs), often in muted blues, greens, pinks, beige.
  • Muted, earthy tones—such as soft blues, ochres, greens, and creams —typical of mid-century Swedish design.
  • High-quality wool, sometimes woven on a linen warp.
  • Many of her rugs are signed with her initials “Å” woven into the corner. Recently professionally cleaned.
