Carriage Cushion with knotted pile in relief

Sweden, circa 1790-1825,
Price: SOLD 345,000 ISK

A carriage cushion with knotted pile in relief, from southwestern Scania (Skåne), Sweden, is a beautiful example of Swedish folk textile art, particularly from the 18th to 19th centuries. Material is red flat woven ground with a knotted polychrome pattern of three connected medallions with hearts as well as rhombs with a trellis patterned border. These cushions were traditionally made for use in horse-drawn carriages and were considered both practical and decorative items, often part of a bride’s dowry or festive occasions. These cushions are now considered folk art treasures, often found in museum collections or vintage Scandinavian design auctions. They represent a unique blend of utility, regional identity, and artistic expression.
